Australia's income tax system is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and applies to Australian residents on their worldwide income. The system is progressive with five tax brackets ranging from 0% to 45%. Australia also levies a Medicare levy of 2% on taxable income, which funds the national healthcare system. The financial year runs from July 1 to June 30, which differs from most other countries.
The 2025-26 Australian tax year features a tax-free threshold of $18,200. Above this, the first bracket applies 19% tax up to $45,000. The next bracket applies 32.5% on income between $45,001 and $120,000, then 37% up to $180,000, and 45% on income above $180,000. The Medicare levy of 2% is added to most taxayers' tax bills. These brackets are indexed annually for inflation.
Superannuation is Australia's mandatory retirement savings system. Employers must contribute 11.5% of employees' ordinary time earnings to a superannuation fund. Employees can also make voluntary contributions, which may receive tax benefits. Superannuation contributions are generally taxed at concessional rates within the fund (15%), significantly lower than personal income tax rates, providing substantial long-term tax savings.
All Australian workers must obtain a Tax File Number (TFN). Most employees have tax withheld automatically through the PAYG (Pay As You Go) system. Employers withhold tax based on the employee's income level and tax file number declaration. At the end of the financial year, the ATO reconciles actual tax liability with amounts withheld, and most workers receive a tax refund.
Australian taxpayers can claim various work-related deductions including uniforms, tools, professional fees, and home office expenses. Tax offsets, such as the Low and Middle Income Tax Offset, provide direct reductions in tax liability for eligible taxpayers. Seniors and pensioners may qualify for additional offsets. Charitable donations also provide tax deductions and can benefit eligible organizations.
