Spain's income tax system, known as Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas FÃsicas (IRPF), is administered by the Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria). The IRPF is a progressive tax that applies to individuals with income from employment, self-employment, investments, and other sources. Spain's tax system funds public services, healthcare, education, and social programs throughout the country.
The Spanish tax system features a progressive structure with six brackets, with rates ranging from 0% to 45%. There is a minimum exemption of €6,000 for most taxpayers. Additional tax brackets apply for those with higher incomes, with the top marginal rate of 45% applying to income exceeding €60,000 annually. Regional variations may also apply depending on your autonomous community.
Employee social security contributions (Cotizaciones a la Seguridad Social) are mandatory in Spain and cover healthcare, pension benefits, unemployment insurance, and other social benefits. The employee contribution is approximately 6.35% of gross salary, while employers contribute an additional portion. These contributions are automatically deducted from your monthly paycheck.
Most salaried employees have their taxes withheld through the PAYE system (retención en nómina). However, annual tax declarations (Declaración de la Renta) are required for most taxpayers. The declaration period typically runs from April to June each year. This process allows taxpayers to claim deductions, adjust withholding, and receive refunds if they've overpaid throughout the year.
Spanish taxpayers can claim various deductions and exemptions including personal and dependent exemptions, pension contributions, certain professional expenses, and mortgage interest on primary residences. Additionally, Spain offers deductions for contributions to authorized pension plans, donations to charities, and environmentally sustainable home improvements.
